How are the curriculum models appropriate for gifted students?
Parallel Curriculum Model
- Flexible to the interests of the students
- Modification by Ascending Levels of Intellectual Demand is incorporated into the model
- Curriculum is represented by multiple perspectives
- Encourages reflection and global thinking
- Remedy for curriculum fragmentation
- Developed as a means of further educating students who have the background knowledge, not to be used as a form of remediation
- Emphasizes teaching advanced content that further frame disciplines
- Provides higher order thinking and processing
- Students use terms inter-changeably from one field of study to another, ie. a student may write about a pioneer and their point of view, rather than simply use the term "point of view" in a language arts class
- The idea of ICM is to scaffold learning for students in a worldly manner, and allow the students the opportunity to explore deep understanding of content and concepts
- Curriculum developers are able to insert many exceptional learning opportunities for these students.
- Interest based research and theories can be added.
- Gives the student a choice in how they demonstrate mastery of their learning.
- While this is not an all-inclusive list, you can clearly see how this method of developing/teaching/learning addresses the needs of gifted students.
